Hair loss in autumn: why it happens and what to use

Oct 5, 2026

Every year, between the end of September and November, the same thing happens: more hair on the brush, more hair in the shower drain, more hair on the pillow. If you've noticed it in recent weeks, don't panic. In most cases, it is a seasonal, temporary, and very common phenomenon. Let's see why it happens, how long it lasts, and what to use to support your hair during this phase.

Why hair falls out more in autumn

Hair lives in cycles: a long growth phase (anagen), a short transition phase, and finally the resting phase (telogen), at the end of which it falls out to make room for a new hair. In summer, thanks to light and heat, many hairs stay in the growth phase longer; with the arrival of autumn, a significant portion enters the resting phase all at once. The result, a few weeks later, is more visible hair loss than usual.

Added to this are other factors typical of the season:

  • The "toll" of summer: sun, salt, and chlorine leave the hair shaft more fragile and the scalp more stressed.
  • Change of pace: returning to work, fewer hours of daylight, stress, and a less careful diet also affect the hair.
  • A neglected scalp: excess sebum, itching, or dandruff make the environment less favorable for growth.

How much hair loss is normal?

Losing between 50 and 100 hairs a day is physiological. In autumn, this number may increase for a few weeks: seasonal shedding generally lasts from 6 to 12 weeks and then subsides on its own, as new hair begins to grow again.

When is it better to consult a dermatologist or trichologist? If the shedding lasts more than three months, if you notice thinning areas or patches, if there is pain, redness, or intense itching, or if it appears after a pregnancy, illness, or change in medication. Cosmetic products help, but they do not replace a diagnosis.

The autumn anti-hair loss routine, step by step

1. Shampoo: gentle and specific

The first step is also the one that is repeated most often, so it counts. Choose an anti-hair loss or fortifying shampoo that is gentle on the scalp, and massage with your fingertips (never with your nails) for a couple of minutes: the massage stimulates microcirculation and helps the active ingredients work. Use lukewarm, not boiling, water.

Some suggestions, for different budgets:

2. Treatment: vials, serums, and lotions

This is where it makes the difference. Anti-hair loss vials and serums are applied directly to the scalp, row by row, and massaged in without rinsing. The key word is consistency: a serious cycle lasts from 6 to 12 weeks, and the results are evaluated at the end, not after a week.

3. The lengths: don't forget them

Hair that breaks looks like hair that falls out. For this reason, in addition to the scalp, take care of your lengths with a conditioner or a light mask: elastic and nourished hair breaks less during brushing.

Habits that help (and those to avoid)

  • Brush gently, starting from the ends and working your way up, especially when wet.
  • Avoid overly tight ponytails and buns: continuous pulling weakens the hair at the root.
  • Use hair dryers and straighteners at moderate temperatures, always with a heat protectant.
  • At the table: protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins are allies of the hair. Before taking supplements, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Sleep well and try to manage stress: it seems trivial, but hair is one of the first things to suffer.

In short

Autumn shedding is normal and temporary, but it is also the best time to take care of your scalp. A specific shampoo, a cycle of vials or serum used consistently, and a little extra attention in your daily routine are usually enough to reach winter with stronger hair. And if something doesn't convince you, the opinion of a specialist is always the right choice.
