Infrared cooktop: how it works and which one to choose
Infrared straighteners are among the most sought-after styling tools for those who want smooth, shiny hair while stressing the fiber as little as possible. But how do they really work, and are they always the right choice? In this guide, we explain the technology, the temperatures to use based on your hair type, and how to choose the right model.
How an infrared straightener works
In a traditional straightener, heat is transferred from the plates to the hair primarily through contact, heating the outer surface first. In infrared straighteners, the plates also emit infrared radiation, which penetrates the hair shaft more gradually and evenly. The result is that the hair is styled from the inside, often with fewer passes and at slightly lower temperatures.
Advantages over a classic straightener
- More uniform heat: the strand heats up evenly, without any hotspots.
- Fewer passes: the style sets faster, so the hair is in contact with the plates for less time.
- Lower temperatures: you can often achieve the same result by lowering the heat slightly.
- More shine: the cuticle remains more compact, and the hair reflects light better.
However, be careful: "infrared" does not mean "damage-free." Heat is still heat, so it is always important to apply a heat protectant before styling and to work on completely dry hair.
Which temperature to use
- Fine, bleached, or fragile hair: 140–150 °C.
- Normal hair: 160–180 °C.
- Wavy or thick hair: around 200 °C.
- Very thick or curly hair: up to 230 °C, only if necessary.
Always start with the lowest temperature and increase it only if the strand does not straighten: it is the best way to protect your hair over time.
Wide or narrow plates?
Wide plates are ideal for long, thick hair because they work on larger sections and shorten styling time. Narrow plates are more precise: perfect for short hair, bangs, and creating waves or flipped ends. Whatever model you choose, clean the plates about once a month to remove product residue that can reduce glide.
